Have you heard the song “Oceans” by Hillsong United? Here are some of my favorite lines from the song:
You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand
Sometimes when listening to it I close my eyes and envision Jesus out on the water, calling me to Him just as He did with Peter. The water looks slippery, but He stretches out two nail scarred hands and assures me it’s ok. Like with Peter, circumstances of life (Matt. 14:30) take my focus off of Him. Panicked, I begin to drown, then look up and there He is… in love and mercy, with outstretched arm.
In ministry, some days it is easy to become distracted by needs and hurts and heartbreaks. Even as I pray over the weekly prayer requests we receive from our outreach team I will often cry out, “Oh God! The need is so great!” That’s when I see His mighty arm that is strong to save (Zeph. 3:17) as He says, “I did not call you to them, I called you to me. Focus on me and let’s walk on water together.” What a deal.
