For ten years, Veda hadn’t set foot in a church.
Then one night, inside the club where she works, she met Maris, one of our outreach volunteers. They got to talking and realized they live near each other, so they exchanged numbers. When Veda found out Maris was part of a church, she said something that has stuck with all of us since:
“I’ve been wanting to go back to church. I just didn’t know how.”
So Maris invited her.
Veda couldn’t make it that first Sunday. Life happens. But Maris asked again.
The next Sunday, Veda walked through church doors for the first time in ten years. She cried during the service.
And Maris didn’t just wave goodbye and hope she’d come back. She introduced Veda around, to people in the church, to the pastor. Then the two of them went to lunch.
They sat there for three hours. Maris just listened. To Veda’s story, her dreams, the things she loves, the life she’s hoping to build. At some point Veda mentioned she has a real passion for interior design, and Maris started thinking through the women she knows in that church who might be able to encourage her, mentor her, help her actually chase that.
This is why we believe so deeply in equipping the local church. Outreach can start in a club. It doesn’t have to end there.
Sometimes it looks like trading phone numbers. Inviting someone to church, and then inviting her again when the first time doesn’t work out. Three hours at a lunch table. Listening to someone’s dreams instead of just her story. Opening a door to a community that keeps showing up after you do.
