How The Adult Entertainment Industry is Changing

Over the past two decades, the adult entertainment industry has shifted significantly. Technology has reshaped how content is produced, advertised, and consumed. What once required physical proximity now often happens through screens.
Online platforms, social media, dating apps, and digital marketplaces have created new pathways for connection. Unfortunately, they have also created new pathways for exploitation.
The Digital Shift
In recent years, researchers and anti-trafficking organizations have identified the internet as a primary recruitment and advertising space for trafficking and exploitation. Social media messaging, online dating platforms, and false job postings are now common entry points for manipulation and coercion.
The adult entertainment industry has also transitioned heavily online. Major brands that once relied on print or in-person venues now operate primarily through digital platforms. This shift has increased accessibility, anonymity, and reach.
For ministries like Scarlet Hope, this change matters.
What This Means for Outreach
Scarlet Hope began with in-person outreach in local clubs. That work continues. However, as exploitation increasingly moves online, outreach must adapt.
Digital Outreach allows us to connect with women who are advertised online. Through structured, secure messaging campaigns, trained volunteers send text-based messages offering prayer, encouragement, and resource referrals.
In 2023, Scarlet Hope sent more than 23,000 text messages across 11 cities. Each message created an opportunity for connection. Not every message results in a conversation. But each one communicates presence.
Responding Faithfully in a Changing Landscape
The realities of online exploitation can feel overwhelming. The scale is large. The systems are complex.
But the Church is not without response.
Technology can facilitate harm. It can also facilitate connection. Digital Outreach is one way we steward technology to extend compassionate, trauma-informed engagement into online spaces.
Our response is not driven by fear. It is driven by faithfulness.
