A few weeks ago, after a routine night of outreach, Scarlet Hope volunteers were preparing to leave a local club when they noticed emergency vehicles nearby.
Before they could process what was happening, the club manager walked straight toward them.
“Oh good. The church ladies are still here. Can you help?”
Nearby was a woman who had just experienced something devastating. First responders were arriving. Police were beginning to gather information. She was shaken and alone. responders were arriving. Police were beginning to gather information. She was shaken and alone.
So the volunteers stayed.
They stayed close. They listened. They prayed. They remained with her while questions were asked and medical personnel provided care. And before they left, they made sure she had a name and a number and someone she could call if she needed help in the days ahead.
As heartbreaking as that night was, one thought has lingered long after it was over.
The church was already there.
The manager did not call a hotline. He did not wait for a social worker or search for a resource online. He turned to the women he already knew because they had been showing up so consistently, for so long, that when a crisis unfolded at 1am outside a club, they were the ones he trusted.
That trust was not built in that moment.
It was built long before it.
Through meals shared around break tables. Through remembering names. Through listening without judgment. Through showing up week after week with no agenda and no immediate need; just presence, just consistency, just the quiet, faithful act of coming back again.
Week after week. Month after month. Year after year.
This is something we want people to understand about the work of Scarlet Hope.
Outreach is not a program. It is not an event or a campaign or a coordinated crisis response. It is relationship, slow, steady, and built over time in spaces most people never enter.
Long before a woman asks for help, relationships are being formed.
Long before a woman is ready to leave exploitation, trust is being established.
Long before a crisis unfolds, the Church has already taken a seat at the table.
We do not show up because something has gone wrong. We show up because we believe that presence, consistent, faithful, unconditional presence is what makes it possible for a woman to reach out when she finally needs to. Because when that moment comes, she should not have to wonder if anyone will answer.
She should already know someone who will.
Please pray for this woman as she begins the difficult journey ahead. Pray for healing. Pray for protection. Pray for the peace that can only come from Christ.
